What is scarless thyroid surgery?
Dr. Joshua Taylor explains the newest procedure offered by TSC Rutherford. Transoral Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery is focused on performing thyroid surgery through the lip, giving the patient a scarless thyroidectomy.
The most profound benefit to this safe and effective approach is the patient no longer having a scar on the neck, unlike traditional thyroid surgery in Nashville.

General & Robotic Surgery
In the hands of Dr. Joshua Taylor, the minimally invasive precise movements of tiny instruments of The da Vinci Robot may be the way your surgery is performed. Rather than the surgeon’s hands in your body, their hand movements are guiding robotic tools. Using a tiny camera with a light that sends precise videos to a monitor in the operating room theater, Dr. Taylor is able to guide the entirety of the surgical procedure from hand held instruments at a control panel.
This Robotic surgical technique means small incisions, the ability for Dr. Taylor to zoom in and magnify the area of concern all with great precision.
This targeted surgical approach generally allows patients to recover faster with less pain and less need for pain medications.
Heartburn FAQ
Welcome to the 2nd facebook live session of “Is your heartburn something more serious?” with Dr. Joshua Taylor, board certified general surgeon with The Surgical Clinic.
What is heartburn or GERD?
Heartburn/GERD is a chronic condition in which acid from your stomach flows back into your esophagus (the swallowing tube). That acid begins to cause damage to the lining of the esophagus and that causes pain. This is where the reflux definition comes from.
Learn more from Dr. Joshua Taylor and Dr. Willie Melvin during their live facebook series.
What are the symptoms you can experience from heartburn or GERD?
Common heartburn or GERD symptoms:
- difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia
- painful swallowing, also known as odynophagia
- dry throat
- sore throat
- feeling of a lump in your neck, referred to as globus sensation
- vomiting or regurgitation
What causes heartburn/GERD/reflux?
GERD or reflux is caused by temporary or sometimes permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. When the lower part of the esophagus, known as the sphincter, is closed no acid can reflux up. However, if the sphincter is open or becomes incompetent, acid can constantly reflux up. Another cause of reflux is if you have a hiatal hernia. Learn more from Dr. Joshua Taylor and Dr. Willie Melvin during their live facebook series.
What is acid reflux surgery?
Over-the-counter and prescription medications are effective for SHORT TERM RELIEF of heartburn symptoms, but for some PPI medications no longer effectively treat symptoms. If your symptoms aren’t being controlled or are getting worse, it may be time to consider advanced treatment.

What is a hernia?
A hernia is is the medical word for a hole in one of our muscle layers. Most commonly, a hernia is located within the abdominal wall, or the stomach muscle layers. The hole allows things from the inside to push towards things from the outside.
Common symptoms of a hernia:
– you may notice a bulge
– you may have some pain from where it’s stretching that tissue
– in severe cases, things can get caught or trapped within that opening that usually results in an emergent reason to need surgery
