What is HPB Surgery?
HPB (hepato-pancreato-biliary) surgery treats diseases of the gallbladder, iver, pancreas and bile ducts. Due to the complexity of HPB surgery, only a specialized general surgeon who has been trained can perform these types of procedures.
Dr. Mariana Chavez is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases of the liver bile duct, gallbladder and pancreas. Dr. Chavez specializes in minimally-invasive approaches including laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic techniques.
Gallbladder & Bile Duct Tumors
These types of cancers are relatively rare but when found can require extensive general surgery to treat.
Liver Tumors
Tumors of the liver can be either primary liver cancers or liver metastases from other sites in the body. The most common tumor to metastasize to the liver is colorectal cancer. Another type of tumor that metastasizes to the liver is a neuroendocrine tumor of the gastrointestinal tract.
Pancreas Tumors
Cancers of the pancreatic duct are the most common but patients can develop neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas as well as cystic tumors that can either be precancerous or malignant upon presentation.
What is Surgical Oncology?
Surgical oncology is a subspecialty of general surgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with cancer. The foundation of a surgical oncologist’s practice at The Surgical Clinic is moving towards the surgical removal of tumors and cancers. It’s helping diagnose patients with cancer, helping find appropriate treatment plans and following them through their operation into their care after surgery.
Cancer care takes a team approach; it requires an individualized treatment plan per patient. Cancer is a complex problem and our patients deserve a collaborative approach. Schedule a consultation to learn more about our practice of surgical oncology in Davidson County, Nashville, Tennessee.
