What is Vascular Surgery?
To work properly in our bodies, arteries and veins have to be elastic enough to withstand the pressure of blood pumping but they also cannot become saggy, or blood will accumulate in your extremities and not properly return to your lungs. Surgery is required if veins or arteries have stretched, developed weak spots, clogged, or lost their elasticity.
Vascular surgery is used to manage heart and blood flow problems, such as vascular infections and vascular diseases, which affect the vascular system, veins, arteries, and lymphatic circulation.
VASCULAR SURGERY AT THE SURGICAL CLINIC
Your first appointment will involve a vascular ultrasound, This will help to assess the condition and exact position of your veins, helping your surgeon to plan a more effective course of treatments.
Our dedicated team members collaborate with experts in various medical disciplines to guarantee we address your unique needs. Our surgeons hold certifications from the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery. We prioritize minimally invasive procedures to achieve the best results possible, even after recovery.

Imaging Center
The first step towards caring for vascular conditions is proper diagnosis.
Our vascular labs allow us to evaluate blood flow without any invasive procedures, so you can return to your day as normal after your appointment.
These state-of-the-art procedure labs are accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission, and each of the Registered Vascular Technologists (RVTs) are registered through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Your care is delivered by a medical professional with an RVT certification which, while not required in many labs, is our standard to help assure you that tests are being conducted by people specialized in these diagnostic procedures.
MEDICAL ULTRASOUNDS
These non-invasive diagnostic tests assess the blood flow in veins and arteries by using high frequency sound waves to expose a body part and create a picture of the inside, showing the movement of organs and blood flow throughout the body.
VASCULAR SCREENING
These health screenings can help catch any irregularities in the veins, such as the risk of stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, or peripheral artery disease, allowing us to potentially prevent issues before they worsen.
As a community service to provide the best care, The Surgical Clinic’s Vascular Laboratory offers low-cost vascular health screenings that help with early detection of the most common types of vascular disease.
Vascular health screenings should be considered for those who meet one or more of the following:
- 50 years old or older
- Current or previous smoker
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Family history of heart disease, vascular disease, or stroke

Types of Vascular Surgery
There are several types of surgical procedures provided by vascular surgeons, such as:
- Carotid Endarterectomy: Aimed at preventing strokes by removing plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, which are the major blood vessels in the neck leading to the brain.
- Transcarotid Artery Revascularization: This procedure, also called TCAR, is a minimally invasive option for treating carotid artery disease that allows surgeons to help mitigate risks associated with traditional surgery.
- Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR): This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), reinforcing the weakened artery wall and reducing the risk of rupture.
- Peripheral Artery Bypass: Performed to restore proper blood flow in the legs or arms by creating a bypass around blocked or narrowed arteries, this procedure can alleviate pain and improve mobility.

What is vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery is a specialty surgery practice used to manage heart and blood flow problems. These issues include vascular infections and vascular diseases, which affect the vascular system, veins, arteries, and lymphatic circulation. Some conditions that vascular surgeons treat include Peripheral Artery Disease, Chronic Venous Insufficiency, Deep Vein Thrombosis, atherosclerosis, and aneurysms.
What is a VPC?
A Vascular Procedure Center (VPC) is Where we perform venous and vascular procedures for our patients across Tennessee. Using the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, we offer patients hospital-level care in a convenient outpatient facility.
What is TCAR?
TCAR stands for transcarotid artery revascularization. This procedure is a minimally invasive option for carotid artery disease compared to traditional options like CEA (carotid endarterectomy). By taking a less invasive approach, we are able to help mitigate risks associated with traditional surgery.
What’s an RVT ultrasound?
Your care will be delivered by a medical professional with an RVT (Registered Vascular Technician) certification. The RVT certification, not required in many labs, is the standard at The Surgical Clinic’s labs and helps to assure you that your tests are being conducted by people specialized in these diagnostic procedures.
